Minimally Invasive Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery

Gastric Sleeve in Cedar Park, near Austin

A Sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve, is another effective restrictive procedure that reduces the capacity of the stomach, forcing patients to eat smaller meals and consume fewer calories. After undergoing sleeve gastrectomy, most of our patients report feeling satiety consuming fewer calories due to the restrictive nature of the procedure. Our surgeons, who practice in the Austin area, can determine whether a sleeve gastrectomy is an appropriate treatment in your case.

Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve) Surgery

During the surgery, bariatric surgeons Alan Abando, M.D., and Nicole Basa, M.D. remove approximately 70 percent of the stomach, leaving a small, banana-shaped stomach pouch and the intestines fully intact. The stomach can now hold only a small amount of food; patients can eat no more than a few ounces of food at each meal. Patients feel full sooner than they did before surgery. Unlike the Roux-en-Y procedure, the sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) does not modify the digestive tract, so the body’s normal absorption of calories is unaffected.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

A laparoscopic surgery typically means a reduced risk of complications or infection, a decreased recovery time, and less pain associated with the surgery. During laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, our surgeon makes several small incisions and inserts a tiny camera under the skin. The camera projects the image of the internal organs onto a screen in the operating room so that the surgeon can monitor the progress of the surgery. Using small instruments, the surgeon makes precise surgical movements to complete the procedure.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

  • The intestines are unchanged by the surgery; therefore, patients do not experience nutritional deficiencies that can occur with Roux-en-Y surgery.
  • The stomach can hold only a small amount of food, so calorie intake is drastically lessened.
