The goals of bariatric surgery are precisely the same as the goals of dieting and exercising: to promote weight loss and to improve one’s overall health. However one reaches those goals, the benefits of weight loss are also the same. Patients may be able to lose up to 50 percent of their excess body weight in the year following surgery. Their physical transformation will improve their body image, self esteem, and confidence in social and professional settings. Many patients experience a higher quality of life as they enjoy new activities, experiences, and opportunities. In addition to improving their quality of life, weight loss is the best way to reduce, or even resolve, obesity-related health concerns. These include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, heart disease, and fertility problems. Research also shows that successful bariatric surgery can add years to a patient's life.
Surgical intervention becomes necessary when a patient has reached the stage at which doctors would deem them morbidly obese. Morbidly obese individuals are unable to lose weight through traditional diet and exercise efforts. Bariatric surgery is recommended for candidates with a dangerously high Body Mass Index and/or the presence of co-morbidities.

The surgery alone will not produce weight loss that is significant enough to resolve co-morbidities or extend a patient's life. Patients must dedicate themselves to following strict dietary and exercise guidelines after surgery. They must make smart dietary choices, watch portion control, and battle cravings and appetite. This may require the assistance of a nutritionist or psychologist, to whom our practice can provide referrals.
Patients must also adopt a consistent exercise routine. Joining a gym, participating in a sports league, and engaging in recreational activities are all excellent ways for bariatric surgery patients to maintain a healthy weight and nurture their bodies.
Since the post-operative transformation can be difficult to adjust to, our practice urges all patients to seek out emotional support in the form of individual counseling or group therapy. Our practice has a wealth of resources designed specifically to provide guidance and support for patients who have lost weight through surgery.
The costs of gastric bypass or gastric sleeve surgery can be a hurdle for some weight loss surgery candidates. However, our practice is contracted with most major insurance companies; depending on the individual plan, bariatric surgery may be a covered cost. Our practice also accepts CareCredit® healthcare financing plans.
