Gallstones, or small deposits of bile or other chemicals, can lead to uncomfortable medical conditions such as pain, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting. Gallbladder removal, or cholecystectomy, is a common surgery that is often performed laparoscopically. Laparoscopic surgery is a less invasive surgical option that has a shorter downtime and recovery period than traditional open surgery. Learn more about laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, and contact Cedar Park Surgeons, serving Austin and all surrounding areas, to schedule a consultation.
The gallbladder is a small organ located below the liver, and its function is to store bile to aid in the digestive process. Sometimes bile and other chemicals in the gallbladder can build up and form small deposits, or "stones," that cause pain, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting. Or the deposits can travel into the bile ducts, prompting even more serious health problems. To treat this condition requires surgical removal of the gallstones and gallbladder. Gallbladder surgery is also necessary to treat cancer of the gallbladder. In the past, gallbladder surgery was an extremely invasive procedure, requiring several days in the hospital followed by weeks of slow recovery. Dr. Alan Abando and Dr. Nicole Basa perform gallbladder surgery laparoscopically – as they do with laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery and laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery – for our Austin and Cedar Park patients.

The Cedar Park surgical team practices laparoscopic gallbladder surgery for a variety of reasons that increase patient comfort and satisfaction. Laparoscopic surgery is less invasive than traditional forms of gallbladder removal. During laparoscopic surgery, Drs. Abando and Basa will make several small incisions on the abdomen, through which they will insert special tools, including a small camera, to help guide the surgery.
Laparoscopic surgery carries less risk of complications than traditional surgery. The recovery period from laparoscopic gallbladder surgery is much shorter than that of the more invasive alternative. Patients are typically released from the hospital the same day as their surgery, and can recover comfortably at home. Post-operative pain is usually minimal with laparoscopic procedures.
Laparoscopic surgery is not for everyone; certain patients may have pre-existing conditions that make it difficult for our surgeons to operate laparoscopically. Laparoscopic surgery may not be recommended for patients who have had previous abdominal surgeries. A complete consultation with our bariatric surgeons will help determine your best course of action.
