Post Bariatric Surgery Diet Austin, Cedar Park

Dietary Changes after Weight Loss Surgery

Bariatric surgery drastically alters the anatomy of the stomach and in some cases, the digestive tract. Because our bodies use food as fuel to function properly, patients need to commit themselves to making smart dietary choices after surgery. Our surgeons and staff members are available during every part of the process to make recommendations and answer questions about the post bariatric surgery diet. If you'd like more information, contact Cedar Park Surgeons, PA, serving Austin and surrounding communities.

Dietary Changes after Weight Loss Surgery

Bariatric surgery patients must make significant changes to their dietary habits. Depending on the type of procedure that is performed, weight loss surgery reduces the size and capacity of the stomach; in some cases, it reroutes the digestive tract, decreasing the quality of nutrients that the body absorbs. Our bodies need the right kinds of food to function properly, so patients are expected to make disciplined choices about their diets. Here are some general guidelines:

Dumping Syndrome

Dumping syndrome can be a challenge for some patients after bariatric surgery. Because their stomach capacity has been so drastically reduced, patients may experience extreme discomfort if they eat too quickly, too much, or the wrong foods. Dumping syndrome occurs when the stomach rapidly empties its contents into the small intestine. Because it can be extremely uncomfortable, we recommend you speak to our bariatric surgeons about ways to avoid overeating.
